About Empowered Psychotherapy & Consulting

Founder Alexis Cate, aka your empowering empath, is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker & Certified Clinical Trauma Professional. She has worked in New York City the entirety of her career. She completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology at Wagner College and went on to earn her Masters in Social Work Degree from the Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College.

 

Alexis has experience working across all age groups treating a variety of psycho-social concerns, including: depression, anxiety, mood dysregulation, substance misuse, complex trauma, personality disorders, pervasive mental health disorders, suicidality, self-harm, community violence, and domestic/family violence.

Alexis is currently a Clinical Social Worker at an area hospital in the Bronx, NY and provides direct clinical care to adolescents and young adults (ages 14-24) combatting comorbid substance use and mental health disorders. She also provides Continuing Education courses through CEYou! Inc.

Empowered Psychotherapy & Consulting was born to bridge Alexis' passion for helping others with her love of education. She is a compassionate and highly motivated self-starter. Alexis has a strong desire to empower the individuals and families with whom she works and believes it is vital to ensure fellow/future therapists have nurturing behavioral health continuing education. Alexis believes in the importance of holistic health, highlighting the mind-body connection, the practice of mindfulness, and enhancing clinical care by comprehensively understanding each clients needs both in and outside of the therapeutic experience.

Clinical Social Worker

Alexis is an accomplished Clinical Social Worker with a demonstrated history of working in hospital and community based agencies. As a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional, Alexis is skilled in Trauma Informed Care, Crisis Intervention, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing, Individual, Group, Family Therapy, and Couples Work.

Qualifications

March 2019 - Present

Alexis is a Behavioral Health Educator at CEYou! Inc. Her current courses address life skill building in clinical care, suicide assessment/prevention, narrative therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and adolescent substance use & mental health.

December 2016 - Present

Initially working in inpatient medicine as a unit social worker at Montefiore Medial Center in December 2016, Alexis transitioned into her current position as a Clinical Social Worker with the Project Rising/Next Steps Programs in March 2018. Alexis treats adolescents, young adults, and adults managing co-morbid substance use and mental health disorders. 

January 2015 - December 2016

For just under two years, Alexis worked at Staten Island Mental Health Societies OMH and OASAS clinics providing individual and family therapy to children as young as 5 and adults as old as 55. 

August 2014 - October 2016

Working under Michael Zampella, LCSW-R, Alexis provided clinical care at Silverlake Psychoptherapy, a private practice setting offering individual, couples, and family therapy. Here, Alexis began her work in Dialetical Behavior Therapy. 

June 2014 - December 2014

Alexis provided in-home family therapy and case management services to high-risk families at the Jewish Board Family and Children Services. She utilized Structural Family Therapy and Solution Focused Casework. Alexis collaborated with the NYC Administration for Children's Services on select cases.

September 2012 - January 2016

Initially a Social Work Intern, Alexis was hired as a Counselor at Project Hospitality, Inc. provided group therapy to substance users managing co-occurring mental health concerns.

September 2013 - May 2014

Alexis received internship experience with Jewish Family Service of North Jersey. She provided psychotherapy to children, adolescents, and adults, as well as, case management services to holocaust survivors. Alexis co-facilitated a social skills group to children ages 7-13 and developed a dating abuse intervention and ambassador program for teenagers. 

January 2011 - May 2012

Alexis began interning for Staten Island Legal Services, an interdisciplinary social work and legal practice, during her junior year at Wagner College. Alexis provided clinical and case management services to low-income survivors of domestic violence. She prepared clients for court proceedings against their perpetrators and assisted in debriefing clients following court proceedings while also developing safety plans with clients accordingly. Alexis also assessed client’s eligibility in receiving victim compensation via the Office of Victim Services of New York State, Victim Assistance Program.
